Since v7.0 you can have only 1 instance of the stand-alone player. However you can have multiple instances of the embedded player (for example, in a web page) or you can just use the old v6.4 In other words i would like to be able to have several windows media player opened with a different video file in each.

You can only embed multiple instances of WMP7 in your browser via HTML. Actually I never tried running multiple instances of WP until just recently. I was using an earlier version of Media Player, probably version 5 or 6, I suspect here you upgraded From Media Player 6 to Windows Media Player 7 or 8. Media Player 6 is still installed (as is the Media Player from Windows 3.1).
